This is the third in a series on the 2008 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
Three of the show gardens were designed by students, finalists in a competition run by Flemings. The competition has been run for 9 years.
This year the theme of the competition was “Cooling the planet, one backyard at a time.”
The video below also shows these 2 gardens.
A Tale of Two Gardens
Designed by Yen Ong, NMIT, Victoria
This garden won the competition. It was a very inviting garden and stunning too look at.
My first impression was color and space. My eyes were drawn straight to the pair of maples and the sculpture. From there they moved across the deck to the cushions. I had a strong urge to walk up the path and sit down to enjoy it.
Features of this garden that appealed to me include the elliptical shape of the deck, the metal seats in the long grass, and the contrasting sections of plants and mulch.
Radiate
Designed by Amy Reed, Urrbrae TAFE, South Australia
The two parts of this garden that impressed me were the dry river bed and the circular seating area - I think the bricks look great.
The garden also had a sense of depth, thanks to the outdoor living are at the back. There was a clear sense that two rooms had been created.
Two other things that I like are the stainless steel fan sculpture and the geometric elements.
The amazing sculptures in these gardens are by Lump.
