Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show

This is the fifth in a series on the 2008 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Another interesting part of the show was the Avenue of Achievable Gardens.

This section included 14 gardens designed and installed by Melbourne TAFE students. The aim was to showcase gardens that are economical and within the abilities of the average gardener.

To encourage people to try these gardens at home, a recipe card was provided for each. The recipe cards include a layout of the garden, the ideas behind the design and a list of the plants used, with numbers on the layout for placement.

Two examples that I particularly liked are:

Earthy Glow
Earthy Glow Earthy Glow Earthy Glow
Designed by Chris Jonasz from Holmesglen Institute of TAFE.
This is my pick of the Achievable Gardens. It shows great imagination and use of color. The range of foliage and the variations in height make it a feast for the eyes.

I am a big fan of succulents and grasses and really like the way both have been used to add contrast and color. Chris also makes good use of rocks and timber and mulches like pebbles and bark.

Hammock Haven

Hammock Haven
Designed by Anna White, Dan Jarchow, Darren Campbell and Jacob Kowalewsi from Swinburne Institute of TAFE.

I like this garden because it is fairly simple and looks very inviting. The pergola is sturdy and the hammock very appealing. I also like the character the garden gets from the bluestone path and the screen used along the back wall.

The Avenue of Achievable Gardens was sponsored by Debco and initiated by the Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria.

This is the final post in the series. The other posts are:
